Troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, under Operation Fansan Yamma, killed several terrorists and intercepted 899 rounds of ammunition in separate operations across Zamfara and Kaduna states on Wednesday, September 2.
In Zamfara, troops of Sector 2 acted on intelligence about terrorists moving from the Fakai area toward Kwanar Jolof and Tashar Dole in Shinkafi and Zurmi local government areas. The troops laid an ambush at Kwanar Jolof and engaged the group, neutralising several fighters while others fled with injuries. A search of the area turned up an RPG launcher, an RPG bomb, an AK-47 rifle, six AK-47 magazines, 106 rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle.
In Kaduna, troops of Sector 1 stopped a vehicle at a checkpoint along the Saulawa-Zaria Road. One passenger resisted a search of his bag and attempted to flee before being pursued and neutralised. Soldiers found 793 rounds of ammunition concealed inside sacks of gari. The vehicle and its driver were taken into military custody for further investigation.
The operations were disclosed in a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, media information officer for the task force, who described them as part of a sustained campaign to dismantle terrorist networks and cut off the movement of arms across the region.
Zamfara and Kaduna remain among the states most affected by banditry and armed violence in Nigeria's North-West, where military operations against armed groups have continued for several years with mixed results on the ground.
