President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to unfreeze Osun State Government's bank account. The directive comes one day after the freeze triggered political uproar. Tinubu said the timing was inappropriate. Osun holds its governorship election on August 15.
The EFCC obtained a court order on August 5 to freeze the state accounts. Governor Ademola Adeleke accused the commission of political manipulation. The PDP said the freeze was designed to cripple the state government before the polls. Tinubu has now intervened directly. He said he was embarrassed by the timing. He noted that every federal action is often attributed to him. He stressed that he has allowed anti-corruption agencies to operate independently. The President said nothing should suggest federal agencies are influencing the electoral process.
Tinubu directed the EFCC to return to court and vacate the order. He also told the commission to discontinue any action against Osun State over the frozen accounts. The EFCC has not yet responded publicly. The PDP has welcomed the President's intervention. Opposition figures had accused Tinubu of using the EFCC as a political weapon. This reversal may dampen those claims. The Osun election is now eight days away. Security agencies have pledged a peaceful vote.
