For close to two months, thousands of student beneficiaries went without their monthly stipend after a technical glitch disrupted NELFUND's payment portal, leaving many struggling to cover feeding, transport, and accommodation costs. The delay sparked growing frustration on campuses nationwide, with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at one point threatening to occupy NELFUND's headquarters if the issue wasn't resolved.
Payments have now resumed. NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez confirmed that the platform upgrade behind the delay has been completed, and that beneficiaries would start receiving funds this week — covering every month owed, not just the current one. He later reaffirmed on social media that "it is official, NELFUND upkeep payments have resumed."
A fake notice circulated online claiming the Federal Government had suspended upkeep payments entirely for the 2025/2026 session. NELFUND publicly debunked this, confirming it never suspended disbursements — the delay was purely technical, not policy-driven.
