A forum comprising former legislative leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the upcoming 2027 general election. They have committed to mobilizing support for his candidacy across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

This endorsement was made during a national summit of the Forum of Former Presiding Officers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria, an APC-aligned group of former Speakers and Deputy Speakers. The event took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and centered around the theme “Bold Leadership, Bold Reforms: From Subsidy to Renewed Hope."

The forum's resolution commended President Tinubu for his vibrant leadership and dedication to national development, stating, “In recognition of the President's colourful, visionary leadership and commitment to national development, FOPSHAN unanimously endorses President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for a second term in office in the 2027 general elections.”

The group expressed its support for the administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy in 2023. They acknowledged the initial hardships this decision caused but emphasized that these challenges should be evaluated against the expected long-term benefits. They resolved to engage with citizens at the grassroots level to explain government policies more effectively.

Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, who chaired the summit, shared that his evaluation of Tinubu’s political path convinced him that the president is focused on long-term reforms rather than just immediate political gains. Additionally, former Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong recognized the economic challenges stemming from the reform program but insisted that Nigeria must transition from macroeconomic stabilization to shared prosperity.

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, who chairs the forum’s Board of Trustees, defended the removal of the subsidy, asserting that its benefits must translate into investments that enhance the country’s productive capacity. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu attended as a special guest and encouraged former Speakers and Deputy Speakers to continue their involvement in public service, emphasizing that leaving political office should not equate to abandoning the nation. She also expressed gratitude to the forum for endorsing her husband.

In their resolution, the forum urged President Tinubu and state governors to utilize the legislative expertise of former presiding officers in future government appointments and policy development. As a body of former officials aligned with the ruling party, this endorsement signifies ongoing efforts to mobilize support within APC ranks in anticipation of the 2027 elections rather than a consensus across party lines.
