In a recent speech, Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured Nigerians that the nation’s security challenges “will soon be overcome.” He also highlighted significant reforms in the banking sector, asserting that it has been strengthened more than ever in recent years.
Encouraging citizens to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope reforms, Akpabio emphasized a strategic shift among security forces from a reactive to a proactive approach in combating criminal organizations. “The security agencies are now taking the battle straight to the hideouts of criminals, bandits, and insurgents,” he stated, expressing confidence that this new strategy will lead to the defeat of insecurity. He called for greater collaboration between the public and security forces, noting that military equipment alone cannot eliminate crime without reliable community intelligence.
Turning to the economy, Akpabio credited improvements in the banking sector, along with ongoing recapitalization efforts, for restoring depositor confidence. “Currently, due to the ambitious vision and strategic insight of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, our banking sector has evolved from mere survival to complete dominance,” he remarked.
He described it as one of the safest and most technologically advanced banking systems in Africa. While acknowledging that many Nigerians are still facing economic hardships, he framed this as a necessary sacrifice for structural reform. Akpabio assured citizens that the president and his cabinet are “tirelessly working” and encouraged Nigerians at home and abroad to contribute to national development.
Akpabio’s optimistic outlook on insecurity is not new; he has made similar commitments throughout the year. In June, he declared that Nigeria would overcome its security issues, and in February, he promised that banditry and insurgency would be resolved by 2026.
Despite these assurances, the nation continues to grapple with frequent attacks, kidnappings, and confrontations with armed groups. Recent reports from the Defence Headquarters indicate hundreds of terrorists have been slain and numerous kidnapping victims rescued in August alone.
Furthermore, ongoing incidents, such as the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Niger State, underscore the severity of the security challenges that Akpabio aims to address with his reassurances.
