The AU uses a tiered financing framework based on member states' GDP. Kenya previously sat in Tier Two, the medium contribution scale. It now joins Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Angola in Tier One. These nations fund the core operations and development mandates of the African Union. Kenya will contribute up to $35 million toward the regular budget and Peace Fund. The AU has set contribution limits to ensure fairness among members. The decision signals Kenya's rising economic stature on the continent.
The elevation took effect immediately after the July 2026 Executive Council vote. Kenya's government has pledged to meet its new financial obligations. Analysts say the move strengthens Nairobi's diplomatic leverage within AU structures. Other Tier Two nations may seek similar upgrades as their economies expand.
